Description
Brookes Joinery, a Hull-based expert in joinery and refurbishment, engaged us to install a BS9251:2021 Category 4 compliant sprinkler system in one of two identical residential towers they were renovating. The project involved transforming an unoccupied apartment block in Liverpool, into a high-standard rental property, addressing the demand for quality housing in the area.
The fire service recommended a sprinkler system, leading Brookes Joinery to consult with Base Fire Sprinklers for advice and planning. Our team conducted a site survey with Brookes Joinery to discuss specific project requirements. Given the building’s height, over 18 metres, we determined that a Category 4 sprinkler system was essential. We provided a breakdown of the sprinkler system’s components, operational considerations, and response mechanisms specific to this structure.
After the initial consultation, Brookes Joinery promptly contracted us to design and install the system, with work commencing in early 2022. The sprinkler system was then integrated throughout the building, with pipework routed around the perimeters of rooms due to the preservation of original ceilings in both apartments and corridors. Sidewall sprinkler heads were strategically positioned to meet safety standards while maintaining the building’s aesthetics.
Upon completing all testing, Brookes Joinery concealed the pipework and sprinkler heads to create a seamless appearance. In plant areas on the ground floor, exposed piping was fitted with pendant sprinkler heads for accessibility. In line with BS9251:2021, all control valves were electrically monitored to maintain real-time system oversight.
To ensure ongoing operational reliability, we also installed a comprehensive monitoring system that supervises all sprinkler components. This system triggers an alert if any element affecting the system’s automatic fire response malfunctions, ensuring timely action and safeguarding building occupants.
